Bendemeer Food Centre

Bendemeer Food Centre

Prawn Noodles: One of the local delights that I like since young. Normally hawkers will put in too much oil in a bowl like this. But this hawker in Bendemeer Food Centre had made it very healthy with reduced oil without request. For those who do not know, the flovourful soup is obtained by boiling prawn shells. The usual garnishing ingredients include prawns, fish cake, pork, kangkong, bean sprouts and topped with some fried sliced shallots to enhance the taste further.

Satay Beehoon: A yummy plate of rice vermicelli topped with blenched liver, pork, tofu puff, sotong, cockles, bean sprouts and kangkong with generous helping of spicy satay sauce spooned over.

Days after eating this, I discovered that the “niang dou fu” stall In Punggol Plaza is selling this local delight too. I must try it someday.

It is lightly damp with soft noodles served on a fragrant soft palm bark [opei leaf], well flavoured, textured with eggs [sometimes] and with pieces prawns and sotong rings served with sambal chillies and lime.

Rika said this was good...must be, because there is always a queue waiting to be served.

Beef noodles, an adequately flavoured sauce spooned over a bowl of thick rice noodles with slices of blenched beef is most satisfying! Sadly, this bowl I had lacked the oomph! It is mediocre...some flavours were certainly missing from the sauce!

Poached Live Prawns With Superior Herbs: The prawns were succulent and the soup was tasty, which Rika enjoyed especially. Someday I would like to cook this, I recognized the herbs used in this dish.

The herbs used were Ginseng roots, Astragalus [Huang Chi 黃耆], Angelica Sinensis [dang gui 當歸/ 当归] and wolfberries [gou ji zi 枸杞子] and Hemlock Parsley / Ligusticum [chuan xiong 川芎]. They are photos of these herbs here: Food And Herbs I did not know the uses of Hemlock Parsley / Ligusticum until I read it on this website!

Excerpt: This herb, Hemlock Parsley / Ligusticum [chuan xiong 川芎], is said to be good for: Promoting the circulation of blood and vital energy; expel wind and alleviate pain; lower blood pressure. Used for abdominal pain after childbirth, menstrual disorders, chest pain, recurrent headache, and rheumatism. [Please remember; always seek advice from a doctor if you have a medical condition.]

Chilled Chrysanthemum Ginseng Jellies: Glossy and smooth with pieces of wolfberries and flavour with ginseng and chrysanthemum in the right doses, really great in taste!

I believe Rika can make these jellies as well if she has time, she is good at it anyway~

Mini Monk Jumps Over The Wall: Delicious broth and contents that typically include abalone, shark fins, sea cucumber, fish maw, mushrooms, chicken, jinhua ham, scallops and Chinese herbs etc. With the appealing smell and taste, we liked it instantly! One thing though, Rika disliked the pieces of shark fins and passed them all to me!
