Chinatown - Chinese New Year 2008 - Year of the Rat

“Kueh kapit moulds”: The sight of these moulds kind of made me a little sad of my hasty decision...these are things I once had and were thrown away four years ago.

A few days ago, Rika talked about eating handmade "love letters" or "kueh kapit"...this reminded me of the yesteryears’ long hours of sitting in front of charcoal stoves with my sisters and happily making tins of our own "kueh kapit" which were crispy, fragrant and much better than any commercially produced ones that we have had so far!

ER told me to buy them again instead of lamenting...the difficult part is where to find them. Not like in the old days, they are no longer a common sight now.

The bottle of Nyonya "love letters" that I bought for tasting this year was a disappointment, some of them are sour in taste which indicated that the batter was not handled properly and hence it has turned sour before baking. The batter is a mixture of water, coconut milk, eggs, sugar and flour.
